Hearing & Visual Impairments 

  • Always approach from the front
  • Always identify yourself
  • Say patient’s first name & gently touch shoulder or arm in a non-threatening manner
  • Avoid loud noises, use large print items, and audiotapes
  • Check hearing aids & glasses often
  • Get down to patient’s eye level

Language & Communication

People with Alzheimer’s often revert back to their earliest spoken and understood language.  They can sometimes be prompted by asking them to “speak English” please.  Long-term memories are usually very good.

             What you can do or look for: 

  1. Never argue with a dementia patient
  2. Is there a sight or hearing problem?
  3. Repeat your instructions
  4. Turn off background interference (TV)
  5. Smile:  Your expression says a lot
  6. Allow time for patient to respond
  7. Address person by first name
  8. Patience is necessary
  9. One-step instructions & questions
  10. Use eye contact and touch with love
  11. Body Language can send positive and negative messages
  12. Always use dignity & respect
  13. Always identify yourself
  14. Reassure & Encourage

 

Open-Ended Questions

Limiting choices to one or two items will allow the patient to stillhave a feeling of control.  Overwhelming the patient with questions that they can no longer answer is a major cause of fear and anxiety behaviors.

No:  What do you want to do today?

Yes:  Do you want to go for a ride in the car?

 

No:  What do you want for dinner?

Yes:  Do you want chicken or fish?

 

No:  What are you going to wear?

Yes:  Would you like to wear the blue blouse?
