Dementia Caregiver Resources, Inc.

Mission and Vision

The founder of Dementia Caregiver Resources, Karen (Karle) Truman, saw her own beloved mother, grandmother, and other relatives stricken with Dementia, a terrible mind-robbing disease. And that's why the non-profit Dementia Caregiver Resources, Inc. organization was born, designed to help the caregiver through what we call a "journey" of dealing with a Loved One with any form of Dementia. As experts in Dementia care, we've also seen in others how caring for someone with any form of Dementia can be an emotionally-draining time, requiring much patience, time and even money.

Because every Dementia patient is different, it can be quite difficult for caregivers to find answers to help guide them through the maze of key things to know, do and plan for. We don't claim to have all the answers.

However, we liken the Dementia caregiver experience to a "journey" into this unknown. With information such as Caregiver Tips and addressing the issue of In-Home vs. Long-Term Care Placement among many topics covered, our role is to help shed some light to ease your way down this pathless path that we call:

♥ Light for the Journey — Courage for the Soul

Just knowing that you made a difference is a wonderful feeling! This journey has many paths. The road is bumpy, so hang on tight for the ride of your life! It will not be boring or conventional --- this much we know for sure.

Our guiding principles are very simple yet speak volumes:

Our Vision :

Our Mission :

Empowering Dementia Caregivers to reclaim their lives.

We clearly see a need for dementia specific referrals, education, support, and counseling services. Our goal is to provide caregivers with validation and encouragement to continue on their caregiving journey.

Born and raised in Chicago, Karen (Karle) Truman received her PhD in 1996 from the American Institute of Holistic Theology. She is the founder and guiding force behind the creation of Dementia Caregiver Resources, a non profit organization since 1997. In addition to her book, now in its 5th printing, Karen facilitates numerous ongoing support groups, conducts mandatory staff trainings and is a featured speaker/presenter at professional symposiums and seminars.

Jeff Truman earned his Masters in Education from the University of Southern California and his Masters in Counseling from Alabama. In 1996, Jeff retired from the U.S. Army after more than 20 years of service. He has been the director of Dementia Caregiver Resources since 2007.

Jeff’s emphasis is on helping the caregiver take care of themselves. He has also developed a fun, fast paced program showing how changes in sleep, diet and exercise, and stress reduction can reduce a person’s chances of developing dementia.

Since 2004, Karen and Jeff have organized several caregiver cruise events. These trips have resulted in new friendships, increased awareness and education about dementia caregiving, and even several job offers.

Our youngest cruiser was 4, and our oldest was 89 years young! Jeff and Karen both enjoy the challenge of researching family genealogy. Even though they were raised in cities over 800 miles apart, they have each traced their family lineage back to 17th century Virginia. Karen has been a board member of the Clearwater Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Colonial Dames 17c Berkeley Plantation Chapter. Jeff’s application is pending for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).
